Gascony, the historic name of the GERS (32) department is characterized by a rolling patchwork of sunflowers, corn, vineyards and wooded ridges strewn with mediaeval villages, towns and strongholds.

Pyrenees

Bordered by the river Garonne in the north and the Pyrenees Mountains in the south, Gers is famous for its Armagnac , foie gras, nature, wildlife, pure air and d’Artagnan’s musketeers.

The Gers is a sparsely populated, undulating agricultural area where summer starts early and autumn is kept waiting. To drive between villages on the empty roads passing vines, sunflowers and maize, whilst Kites and Buzzards circle above, is an experience of which one never tires.

Although essentially a quiet rural area, the last discovered in France, there are many local activities to interest residents and visitors. They have various themes but the one constant is a meal usually in the open air.

Town of Condom

The town of CONDOM became an ecclesiastical stronghold in the 9^th Century surviving many changes of fortune in medieval times.  In the 19C it was a leading center for the Armagnac trade, owing to its navigable river, which now attracts leisure craft. Today, with a population of some 7,000, the town is enjoying renewed popularity with its fine lime stone buildings, gothic cathedral, shops and restaurants.

Cultural villages such as LA ROMIEU, LECTOURE, are also close by.

Culture and history in The Gers

The region is rich in culture, history and diversity and attracts many “green” tourists (walking, bicycling, fishing, horseback riding, hunting and of course golf) as well as pilgrims on the route to Santiago de la Compostella which runs through the area.

The nearest major towns to Condom are AUCH and AGEN, whilst the major commercial centers of Toulouse and Bordeaux offer international airports, TGV train stations and major retail, cultural and commercial opportunities.
